The result of Marge's anger against Quimby’s new toll road leads to the discovery of a frozen mailman and his 40-year-old mail. The old mail is delivered to the recipients, including one to Grampa Simpson's deceased wife, and it reveals a secret love affair and who the real father of her baby Homer might be. Confused and emotional, Homer finds Mason Fairbanks (played by actor Micheal York), his wealthy and much improved paternal dad, and happily establishes a father-son relationship with him while rejecting Abe, his surrogate father of 40 years, especially after a DNA test reveals that Mason is indeed his real father. Homer joins Mason on an undersea treasure hunt and when Homer’s life is in mortal danger he reflects upon his childhood and realizes who his true father is. When he confesses that to Abe, Abe has a confession of his own.
Ralph Wiggum, referring to the Star Wars series of movies, confuses the names of C-3PO and R2-D2, exclaiming, "I'm C3-D2!"
The song "Time After Time" by Cindi Lauper is played during a flashback sequence from Homer's childhood, while playing with a question mark in baseball dress.
Blackboard: I am not smarter than the president.
Couch: The family poses on the couch for a series of family portraits. In the 2006 and 2007 portraits the family all looks the same. In 2008 Homer is missing from the picture. In 2009 he is replaced by Lenny. In 2010, Marge is replaced by Carl. In 2011 Lenny is replaced by Jimbo and Marge is back replacing Carl. In 2012 Homer is back in robot form, replacing Jimbo. In the 2013 the rest of the family is replaced by robotic version of themselves. On an additional note, the children are seen aging throughout the series of portraits (something not likely to happen when the series is still on six years from now.)
There should have been little doubt to Homer that Abe was his father. Back in the episode “Homer Simpson In ‘Kidney Trouble’,” Homer donated one of his kidneys to his dad. Abe's body did not reject the kidney. While it is not sure fire proof, i.e. the two could have miraculously been similar acceptors; people directly related by genetics usually make very good match cases.
Mason and Homer search for the Emeralds of Piso Mojado. The term "piso mojado" should be recognizable as the Spanish translation on signs warning of a "wet floor."
Goof: While in the waiting room, just before being told the results by Dr. Hibbert, Mason Fairbanks is wearing a dark blue coat, but when Dr. Hibbert points to him a second later, he's back in his sweater.
