The barely functional Simpson family, first introduced 13 years ago, has had a profound impact on North American culture, so much so that George Bush Sr. declared during the 1992 election: ''We're going to keep trying to strengthen the American family, to make them more like the Waltons and less like the Simpsons.''
Robert Thompson, director of the Center for the Study of Popular Television at Syracuse University, said parents should be thankful their kids are drawn to The Simpsons.
