Plot

Lisa's birthday is coming up, and she asks Bart to actually put some effort into her present this year. Meanwhile. Homer must wear a pink shirt to work after Bart puts his red cap in with the white laundry. While at work Mr. Burns sees Homer with the pink shirt and believes him to be insane. Later he gets a sanity test from Dr. Monroe to bring home. Bart takes the test for Homer and he fails. Homer is promptly committed to a New Bedlam mental institution. There Homer shares the room with a big white man who thinks he is Michael Jackson. Meanwhile, Lisa celebrates her eight birthday without a present from Bart. When Homer and Michael are released from the mental institution, Bart gets Michael's help and writes a special song for Lisa on her birthday. Lisa says it was the best birthday present she ever received. Michael suddenly talks in a normal voice, and reveals he is really Leon Kompowski, a bricklayer from New Jersey.

Memorable quotes

Bart: Hey, we're just like the Waltons. We're praying for an end to the depression, too.

Marge: Bart, I asked you to watch your sister.
Bart: I tried to stop her, but she overpowered me!

Homer: Marge, I can't wear a pink shirt to work. Everybody wears white shirts. I'm not popular enough to be different!

Bart: (reading form) "Do you wet your pants?" Well, even the best of us has an occasional accident.

Michael: Hi, I'm Michael Jackson, from The Jacksons.
Homer: I'm Homer Simpson, from The Simpsons.

Bart: (answering phone) Joe's Crematorium. You kill 'em, we grill 'em!

Bart: (answering phone) Joe's Taxidermy. You snuff 'em, we stuff 'em!

Man: Then one Monday morning, I got up. I got up, I couldn't leave the house. I just couldn't.
Homer: Was the door locked?
Man: No, I just couldn't face what was out there.
Homer: Was it raining?

Lisa: Today is my birthday. You promised to get me something and... and... I'm afraid to ask.
Bart: You know, maybe you should trust that instinct and not ask.

Notes

  • Michael Jackson was credited as ''John Jay Smith'' due to contracual obligations. He did do the voice, however the singing parts were done by Kipp Lennon.
  • When Marge phones the mental institution, she is put on hold to ''Crazy'' by Patsy Cline.
  • Maggie has a doll of Binky, Matt Groening's character from Life In Hell.
  • Signs at the mental institution include: ''You don't have to be crazy to be committed here, but it helps!'' and ''Your mother isn't committed here, so clean up after yourself!''
  • On the phone that Homer wants to call his family on, there are speed dials for Geraldo, Donahue, and Ski Report.
  • When "Michael Jackson" arrives at the Simpsons' house, there is a man holding a sign that says, "John 3:16". This is "Rockin' Rollen Stewart", a born-again Christian whose mission in life is to get his signs on national TV as often as possible, to spread the word of the Lord. The passage he refers to is as follows: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life".
